Apple Refurbished: Real Discounts and When New Stock Appears

Apple Refurbished: Real Discounts and When New Stock Appears

Apple’s Certified Refurbished store is the one place to buy a Mac, iPad, or Apple Watch below Apple’s own price with Apple’s own warranty. The usual advice is “check it often.” We do: our monitor reads every listing on the US refurbished store every hour, and has since June.

On September 30, 2026 the store had 565 live listings. This post is what watching it since June says about the real discount, when new stock shows up, and how long it lasts.

What is on the refurbished store right now

Product lineLive listingsMedian refurbished price
Mac249$1,949
iPad185$969
Apple Watch72$379
iPhone57$849
Apple TV2$189

Mac and iPad are most of the store. The Mac median is high because the refurbished store carries a lot of upgraded configurations (more memory, bigger SSDs, Pro and Max chips), not just base models.

How much does Apple refurbished actually save?

Apple shows a “Was” price and a “Save” amount on most refurbished listings. We could read that saving on 196 live listings (Mac, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV; we could not read one for iPhones). About half of them, 100 of 196, sit between 14% and 16% off.

Product lineMedian savingMedian dollars saved
Mac15.0%$260
iPad14.1%$110
Apple Watch15.4%$70

So the honest answer to “how much cheaper is Apple refurbished” is about 15%. On a Mac that is a few hundred dollars. It is not a clearance-style discount, and it rarely gets deeper.

One thing to know about the “Was” price: it is what that model cost new when Apple sold it. For a current model that is today’s new price. For an older chip or a previous generation, it is a price that no longer exists, so compare against what the current equivalent costs new before deciding a 15% saving is worth an older model.

Apple’s stated terms are the reason people pay a little more here than at a third-party refurbisher: every unit is tested and certified, carries the same one-year warranty as new, and refurbished iPhones get a new battery and outer shell. If you care more about the lowest price than Apple’s warranty, see how grades and prices work on Back Market.

When new refurbished stock appears

Because we read the store every hour, we know within the hour when a new listing first shows up. Since June 11 there have been 131 hourly checks in which at least one new listing appeared.

Day (Pacific time)Hours with new stock
Monday21
Tuesday28
Wednesday27
Thursday30
Friday18
Saturday6
Sunday1

124 of 131 (95%) were on a weekday. Tuesday through Thursday are the busiest, and Sunday is close to dead.

Time of day matters just as much. Only 1 of the 131 fell between midnight and 6am Pacific. The rest are spread evenly across the working day and evening: 43 between 6am and noon, 46 between noon and 6pm, and 41 between 6pm and midnight.

What to do with this: check on weekdays, any time from morning through evening Pacific. Checking overnight or on Sunday is almost always a wasted look.

The pace also changes through the year. In busier summer weeks we saw 25 to 58 new listings a week. September has been slow, 3 to 7 a week. We cannot see why from the store itself, but it lines up with Apple’s fall launch season, so expect thinner restocks in September.

How long a refurbished listing lasts

Here is the part that makes “check it later” risky. We looked at every listing that first appeared since June 11 and has since disappeared from the store. There are 96 of them.

  • 31 (32%) were gone within 2 days
  • 39 (41%) were gone within a week
  • The median listing lasted about 23 days

The fast ones are the in-demand configurations. One Mac Studio listing was up for about three hours. Several MacBook Air listings that appeared on the afternoon of September 2 (Pacific) were gone by midday the next day.

So a third of new listings sell through almost immediately, while the rest sit for weeks. If the listing you want is a popular configuration, assume you have a day or two.

Refurbished prices rarely change

Between August 20 and September 30, only 214 of the 1,558 refurbished listings we have ever tracked changed price at all. The one clear markdown event was a single-day cut on September 9 across Apple Watch listings, a median of 13.6% off. Mac price cuts were rare and small, a median of 3.8% on 18 listings.

The practical point: waiting for a Mac refurbished price to come down is not a strategy. The price you see is very likely the price it stays at until it sells.

A workflow that fits the data

  1. Expect about 15% off. If that saving on an older model is not worth it compared to the current model new, skip it.
  2. Check on weekdays, morning to evening Pacific. 95% of new stock appears Monday to Friday, and almost none overnight.
  3. Move fast on popular configurations. A third of listings are gone within two days.
  4. Do not wait for a price cut on a Mac. Cuts were rare and small.
  5. Use an alert, not a refresh habit. New stock lands at unpredictable hours inside the working day.

We check the refurbished store every hour. The live list of Apple refurbished listings is at Apple refurbished deals, and the price history for any listing is on the Apple price tracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much cheaper is Apple refurbished?

About 15%. Half of the refurbished listings where we could read Apple’s stated saving were between 14% and 16% off, with medians of 15.0% for Mac, 14.1% for iPad and 15.4% for Apple Watch.

When does Apple restock refurbished products?

On weekdays, during the day and evening Pacific time. Of 131 hourly checks since June in which new refurbished stock appeared, 124 were Monday to Friday and only one was between midnight and 6am Pacific.

How fast do Apple refurbished items sell out?

Popular configurations sell fast. Of the listings that appeared since June and have since disappeared, 32% were gone within two days. The median listing lasted about 23 days.

Do Apple refurbished prices go down?

Rarely. Only 214 of 1,558 tracked listings changed price at all between August 20 and September 30. The main exception was a one-day cut across Apple Watch listings on September 9.

Is Apple refurbished worth it?

If you want Apple’s warranty at a lower price, yes: refurbished units carry the same one-year warranty as new. The saving is modest, about 15%, so it makes the most sense on current models, where the “Was” price is still today’s new price.
