Sam's Club Hidden Clearance: Why the Website Never Shows a Discount (and What Does)
Search “Sam’s Club clearance” and you get TikTok videos about hidden clearance, a Krazy Coupon Lady post about the letter C on the shelf tag, and a Sam’s Club help page warning that any website claiming to be a Sam’s Club clearance site is a scam.
That last one is worth taking seriously. But it also raises the question: why is Sam’s Club clearance so hard to find online that scammers can profit from the confusion?
We track about 11,000 Sam’s Club products online and sweep hundreds of clubs for inventory. The answer is structural, and it changes how you should hunt.
The website does not show discounts. At all.
Of 10,975 Sam’s Club items we checked in the last 48 hours, 10,971 list their sale price and regular price as the same number. That is 99.96%. There is no strikethrough, no “was” price, no percent-off badge for the overwhelming majority of the catalog.
For comparison, Dick’s shows a discount on about 64% of its catalog and Academy on about 20%. Sam’s shows one on four items in eleven thousand.
This is not a data glitch on our side. Sam’s Club prices the way a warehouse club prices: the number on the item is the number, and when they want it gone they change the number without advertising the change. A markdown at Sam’s looks like a price, not a sale.
The consequence for every price tracker, browser extension and deal aggregator on the internet: sorting Sam’s Club by “biggest discount” returns nothing. The signal has to come from somewhere else.
Tell number one: the price ending
The one piece of clearance lore about Sam’s Club that holds up is the cents ending. Shelf tags and online prices that end in a 1, most commonly .81 and .91, are markdown prices.
Here is the ending distribution across the live catalog:

Standard Sam’s pricing ends in .98. Big-ticket items end in .00. The .81 items are a small group averaging $7.71, and of the 272 items ending in .81 or .91, 220 are priced under $15. That is not a coincidence of rounding. That is a clearance price point. The .91 ending is less clean: it shows up on $4.91 puzzles and on $300 items alike, so .81 is the ending to trust for apparel and small goods.
Look at what those items are: t-shirts, dresses, shorts, women’s shoes, men’s shorts, tops, skirts, kids’ shoes, college team clothing and jigsaw puzzles. Apparel and seasonal, the categories every retailer clears at the end of the season.
And look at how they got there. On July 14, 2026 our log caught a batch of apparel and footwear moving to .81 endings in one pass:

Six weeks later, on August 27, a pair of 1,000-piece Eurographics puzzles went from $12.98 to $4.91. Same pattern, .91 ending, 62% off, no announcement.
So the rule of thumb is real: a Sam’s Club price ending in .81 or .91 is a markdown, usually 60 to 70% below where it started, and the website will not tell you that.
It is not the only shape. A Member’s Mark 27-gallon storage tote dropped from $31.92 to $7.98 on August 7, a 75% cut that landed on an ordinary .98 ending. And the largest drops in our log, a six-piece power sectional from $1,999 to $159 and a diamond earring set from $2,099 to $329, are furniture and jewelry write-downs that keep round-number pricing. The .81 tell works for apparel and small goods. Big-ticket clearance has to be caught by watching the price itself.
Tell number two: club-level stock
Sam’s Club shows in-club availability per location, and that is where the hidden clearance actually hides.
Across the 286 clubs in a typical sweep, we flag any item where a club reports six or fewer units. In the last 48 hours, 93 items had at least one club at that level. A single low-stock club on an item that is otherwise fully stocked is a display model or a one-off. A dozen low-stock clubs on the same item means the SKU is being run out chain-wide, and the price cut, if it has not happened yet, is coming.
This matters because Sam’s clearance is local. The same item can be $79.98 at one club and $29.81 at the next, and the website shows the price for the club you have selected. If you only ever check your home club, you see one price and one stock count. The item might be clearing at three clubs within a 30 minute drive.
Tell number three: the letter C
In the club, the lower left corner of the shelf tag carries a letter above the barcode. A C means the item is on clearance. This is the tell every TikTok video repeats and it is correct. It is also useless from your couch, which is why the price ending and the club stock count are the online equivalents.
Why the app cannot help you
Scan & Go in the Sam’s Club app will show a price when you scan an item in the club. It will not tell you the previous price, whether the item is clearing at other clubs, or whether the .81 you are looking at was $24.77 six weeks ago. It answers “what does this cost right now, here.” It does not answer “is this a markdown and how deep.”
That is the gap. Sam’s Club pricing has no public history, so the only way to know a price is a markdown is to have recorded the earlier price yourself.
How to actually find Sam’s Club clearance
- Filter by price ending. Apparel, footwear and seasonal items at .81 or .91 are markdowns. Sub-$15 apparel at those endings is almost always 60%+ off the original.
- Watch the price, not a badge. There is no badge. A drop from $31.92 to $7.98 is invisible unless something logged the $31.92.
- Check club stock across your area, not just your home club. Multiple clubs at single-digit stock on the same SKU is the pre-markdown signal.
- Ignore any “Sam’s Club clearance” website that wants your membership login. Sam’s Club has no affiliated clearance sites and says so.
- Move fast on apparel. Sizes at .81 do not restock. The July 14 batch above is mostly gone.
